The center stage of the Mori Lee is held by the award-winning fashion designer,
Madeline Gardner. Madeline Gardner is design director and partner with Mori Lee,
designer of bridal and prom gowns. Madeline Gardner has been with the company since 1985.
She says she always knew she wanted to work in fashion design.
"I started sewing when I was 12 years old," she said. "I
originally wanted to go to Hollywood and make dresses for the movies, but once
I started working with laces I enjoyed it so much, that I realized that if I worked in the bridal
industry, I could work with lace all the time."
Madeline Gardner is originally from Jersey City, N.J., and now lives in Hoboken. She
attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and started designing
junior cocktail evening dresses right out of school for Easy Street Fashions before
joining the Mori Lee.
As
top designer for Mori Lee, Gardner is responsible for developing the bridal and
prom dress collections. Madeline Gardner says the process starts with a sketch concept.
"Sometimes a fabric or new lace will inspire an idea for a sketch,"
she explained. "Then the pattern gets made. After that, we develop the
dress sample. For the bridal collections the whole
process takes at least three months to create the samples."
Gardner
says she tries to give a lot of variety in the designs. She does extensive
research to get her ideas by studying the fashion industry and getting out into
the field and talking with the girls who buy her dresses.
"Studying and developing the prom gowns each season has become a year-round
project," she said.
